Hello everyone,
I have never had an aquarium before, but after doing some research I have decided to start my first planted
aquarium. I have been inspired by some of the beautiful aquascapes I have seen online and in this community, but as a beginner I want to make sure I am doing things right before I jump in.
My goal is to design a low-tech, low-maintenance planted aquarium that still looks lush and healthy, ideally without the need for CO2 injection at this time. I am looking for recommendations and advice on the following:
Tank size: I am thinking of going for a 40-60 litre tank. Is this a suitable size for a beginner, or should I go larger for greater stability?
Lighting: For a low-tech planted aquarium, what type of lighting would you recommend? Finding a balance between price and quality is my goal.
Plants: If I were a beginner, what plant species would you suggest? I am looking for hardy plants that do well in moderate light conditions and no CO2.
Substrate and Fertilization: The choices I am making for substrate are not very clear to me. Is it better to start with regular substrate and add root tablets or liquid fertilizers, or should I start with a nutrient-rich substrate?
What type of filtration would you suggest for this size planted tank? As for whether high or low flow rate is beneficial for plant growth, I have read different opinions.
Ideas for Grow Boxes: Finally, I would like to know what fish or shrimp will work
gen ai well in a planted arrangement and will be easy enough for a novice to maintain.
I am eager to get started and would appreciate any advice, suggestions and experiences you can share to help me design a profitable and entertaining aquarium.
Thanks in advance for your help and support.
